I’m not boasting here, but nobody was more surprised than me to win that award, as I had not formal training in writing. Whether it’s writing about establishing a tire maintenance program or explaining how hydrogen fuel cells work, I get great satisfaction from hearing a reader say, ‘thanks, I learned something from that story.’.
That’s pretty wild for a kid who worked in a chemical plant after high school. If I don’t understand why a topic is worth writing about, I’ll never be able to convince a reader to spend time with the story. What advice do you have for PR people that want to pitch you? What story or stories are you most proud of?
In late March, Avión Tequila’s PR firm, Allison Brod PR, sent a media pitch claiming “ consuming tequila has some serious health benefits.” The pitch offered cocktail recipes and sourced an American Chemical Society study that suggested agave could lower blood sugar, aid in weight loss and boost insulin production.
Whether it was covering coal mining, corruption, health care, labor strikes, chemical leaks or many other bizarre stories, my seven years in West Virginia set the stage for my future career – and I wouldn’t trade those seven years for anything else. For many years, I worked with a writing coach named Jim Stasiowski. E-mail is best.
I cannot claim that I’ve always met this standard myself, as I’m not above a bit of theatricality when pitching an idea or trying to score free drinks. I came across writing that was properly researched, tested and presented. Nothing clever; just basic skills like writing , planning , project managing and listening.
We look at the newsworthiness of anything–a safety incident at a chemical plant, a consent decree from the U.S. I have a background in English literature, so I always enjoyed the writing and reporting more than overall management, though I did enjoy that time as well. What advice do you have for PR people that want to pitch you?
