Aspiring PR agency professionals may be attracted by what seems like the industry’s more glamorous or high-impact moments. But if you talk to people who work in public relations, there’s plenty that makes for sleepless nights. In the agency world, there’s the daily stress of waiting for journalists to say yes, or the pressure of the big new client presentation, for example.

“Passion is when you’re willing to quit your job over something in which you believe.”. I’m not sure who to originally said this, but, regardless, these words have long resonated with me, and it’s something I once remembered at a very specific crossroads in my life. It was a weekend morning and I was hastily dressing for an impromptu business meeting.

Aretha Franklin, commonly called “the Queen of Soul,” died on August 16, the anniversary of the death of the King of Rock, Elvis Presley. This left music fans mourning two timeless entertainment icons. And it left many people discussing the legacy of one of the most prolific women, ever, in the music business. We won’t discuss Aretha’s incredible legacy.

Leaked internal communications can be strategically valuable assets rather than just risks to manage. When used proactively, these leaks can highlight leadership and innovation—qualities that resonate in today’s media. By approaching internal comms with a dual-purpose approach, companies shift from mere risk avoidance to leveraging these moments as credible public messages around strategy.

A few months ago, after considerable vetting and research, I joined AirPR, the data science company for PR and Communications, as their CEO. I was intrigued by the story of its co-founders who had invented PR Attribution – a credible way to tie corporate communications to real business outcomes, i.e. the holy grail of marketing measurement. As I dug deeper, I learned that the team had also invented the Power of Voice metric, essentially an intelligent share of voice metric.

When companies choose a PR firm, the compensation model is usually a factor. Most PR agencies bill on an hourly basis, or in monthly retainer fees. But there’s another way of billing that’s fairly controversial among agency professionals, — the pay-for-placement method. Can it work? We may be biased, because we’ve never worked on a pay-for-publicity basis, but it’s fair to ask if it can be a better model for some clients.

As the public and political pressure continues to mount on social media platforms to make it safer to surf online, the focus of much of the critique has shifted. Facebook, which spent most of last year and the first half of this year very publicly fighting to protect its brand from a flurry of accusations and scandalous headlines, seems to be starting to gain traction with consumers.
Journalists receive an overwhelming number of press releases daily, making it hard for your news to stand out. While some news is valuable, most is not.

Quora recently sent me an email asking about my favorite content curation examples. Image from Pixabay. In years past, answering this would have been a layup (I suppose that’s why I was on their list). Now I was strangely stumped, even disinterested. It’s not that I’m out of touch. These are different times. Content curation had been championed as a way to up the pace of content marketing by riding OPC (other people’s content), and to boost thought leadership, by commen

I frequently hear trained communicators lament to me the following: “Journalists don’t want to cover our subject anymore.”. Though this statement may be accurate, they’re also looking at it the wrong way. It’s true that old system of beats has been dissolving steadily for years now. There are still some beats still covered of course — government, tech, sports are some of the obvious ones — but more and more journalists have become generalists.

There’s more bad news on the “fake news” front. It seems lies are more viral than truth – at least on Twitter. That’s the conclusion of a study recently published in Science magazine. Successful public relations campaigns are not accidents. For consistently successful PR, you need to include these four vital components of public relations messaging success. Know Your Core Message. Some call this a “key” message, but, whatever you choose to name it, the point here is that you have one thing to say that matters more than anything else you want to say.

There is legislation brewing in Europe that could upend digital media. They’re considering making the major platforms like Google, Facebook et al, pay copyright fees for all the content that they now freely distribute and monetize. It’s easy to relegate media list development to the remedial PR file — things that are too basic to analyze or improve. But for PR and media relations people, a good media database is critical. Even the most stellar pitch is useless if the wrong people are targeted; a carefully selected list of fewer reporters will yield better results than a spray-and-pray approach.
