For PR people, the Gillette ad that roiled social media and birthed a thousand thought pieces raises an old question – is there such a thing as bad publicity? Normally when a company manages to generate international attention and earn millions of views for a brand message, it’s a win. Certainly the controversy has been a huge boost for the ad before its official launch on Super Bowl Sunday.
I was watching 60 Minutes this weekend, which ran a segment about AI that highlighted China’s growing clout in the tech (Silicon Valley, hope you were watching; you should be scared, very scared). They interviewed Kai-Fu Lee, the so-called Oracle of AI who boasts a Ph.D., Apple, Microsoft, and Google stints, and runs a Chinese VC firm that’s minted a number of AI unicorns.
Here’s a test for you. Open Instagram and go through the first 10 posts. How many of them are people you know and how many are brands, influencers, ads or celebrities? I just tried this and to no surprise, only one post out of the 10 was from someone I know. Among the other content, I had two paid ads, one celebrity, five influencers, and one brand.

According to a study by executive outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a total of 1,452 CEOs left their posts in 2018, marking the highest number of departures since 2008’s 1,484 and a 25.2 percent uptick from 2017’s 1,160.
