When I think of some of the greatest ethical leaders (the keyword here is “ethical”), a few immediately come to mind, based on what they’ve done for others. At the same time, fast forward to today, with leaders who take ethical “detours.” For me, leadership and ethics go hand-in-hand.
Not only do I have to sleep at night, I need to have my ethics intact to maintain my career. Or at least, it’s not what this APR, ethical, crisis PR professional does. As professional communicators, the PRSA Code of Ethics is a powerful reminder of our responsibility toward our clients, our organizations, and ourselves.
September is PRSA Ethics Month and #PRStudChat will be holding an ethics discussion on Tuesday, September 13th at 8:30 p.m. Our community of PR students, educators and pros will join together for a dynamic Twitter chat on “Ethics – The Heart of Leadership.”
Of course, ethics and values are a personal choice and a business practice. Here’s when your mentors’ ethics and values really matter. As I mentioned in my book, Answers For Ethical Marketers ,” early in my career, I thought my ethics and values were naturally baked into the professionals around me.
If you are a B2B technology company, thought leadership isn’t optional, it’s the biggest marketing lever you have. There is no cheap and cheerful path to thought leadership. Good thought leadership is not easy; if it was, everyone would do it. Comply with regulations, law, industry standards & ethical practices.”
I know that ethics is “taught” in various forms in most colleges and universities, but I have serious concerns as to whether or not the “real world” is included in the process. But how much “this is why ethical behavior is crucial to the success of your client or employer” reality is included, I’m not sure.
These privacy shifts create opportunities for companies to showcase their commitment to ethical practices and consumer trust. By engaging in thought leadership and targeted media placements, companies can highlight their capabilities, fostering trust and positioning themselves as leaders balancing personalization with privacy.
As co-chairs of PRSAs Black Voices Affinity Group, we are constantly reflecting on how Dr. Kings leadership and legacy resonate in our industry today. Ethics above all Dr. King stood firm in his principles, even when it was inconvenient or risky. For communicators, empathy isnt just a skill; its a strategy.
So, then, who is responsible to communicate and demonstrate ethics and values at your company? Do ethics and values go beyond the HR policymakers? Today, everyone is an Ethical Marketer.
